I’m going to explain how to configure things that doesn’t work out of the box.

NVIDIA 8600M GS:

use “Restricted Modules” or install nvidia-glx-new, nvidia-kernel-common packages.

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new nvidia-kernel-common

Sound:

works out of the box, but we have to use “Surrond” as main control (enable it in audio settings). For front mic enable “Capture 1”.

Modem 56K:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

I’ve followed this guide. So, download the driver from hsfmodem_7.60.00.18oem_i386.deb (thanks to Dell). And then,

sudo dpkg -i hsfmodem_*.deb

Now we can use gnome-ppp to set up modem and connection properties.

WLAN:

use “Restricted Modules”.

Scrolling Touchpad:

touchpad works fine, but it doesn’t scroll. So I’ve followed this guide.

Install driver for synaptics and the utility qsynaptics.

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics qsynaptics

We have to modify the xorg.conf file, so make a backup.

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

Remove the automatic part of the touchpad and insert two new parts (one for the touchpad an one for the multimedia keys).

Section “InputDevice”
Identifier “multimedia”
Driver “evdev”
Option “Name” “SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad”
Option “AlwaysCore” “on”
Option “Protocol” “auto-dev”
EndSection

Section “InputDevice”
Identifier “Synaptics Touchpad”
Driver “synaptics”
Option “Protocol” “event”
Option “Device” “/dev/input/by-path/platform-i8042-serio-4-event-mouse”
Option “AlwaysCore” “on”
Option “SHMConfig” “on”
EndSection

And two lines in the “Default Screen” section at the end of the file.

Section “Screen”
Identifier “Default Screen”
Device “nVidia Corporation G80 [GeForce 8600M GS]”
Monitor “Monitor Generico”
Defaultdepth 24
SubSection “Display”
Modes “1280×800”
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section “ServerLayout”
Identifier “Default Layout”
screen “Default Screen”
Inputdevice “Generic Keyboard”
Inputdevice “Configured Mouse”

# Uncomment if you have a wacom tablet
# InputDevice “stylus” “SendCoreEvents”
# InputDevice “cursor” “SendCoreEvents”
# InputDevice “eraser” “SendCoreEvents”
Inputdevice “Synaptics Touchpad”
Inputdevice “multimedia” “SendCoreEvents”
EndSection

Now restart X (ctrl+alt+backspace) or logout-login. I haven’t configured multimedia keys because I don’t use them.

Hibernate-Suspend:

I’ve followed this guide. Sometimes doesn’t suspend; I’m going to debug this (any help would be welcome!).

See you soon,

Hey, do post if you find something interesting on Hibernate/Suspend. I guess that’s an issue which quite a few people face..

Hi, I’ve switched to Ubuntu 8.04 and it hibernates out of the box, but continues to hang on resume after a suspend. I’ll investigate on this and I’ll write soon a new guide.
    Bye.

Hi I’m using ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 at present and it seems that they have resolved hibernate/suspend problems. My system now works fine out of the box.
